India is the world's largest remittance market, and Canada — home to one of the biggest Indian communities anywhere — is a major source. Right now the timing is decent: the Canadian dollar buys more rupees than it did in early spring.

But the gap between providers is wide. On a C$500 transfer, the difference between the best service (TapTapSend) and the worst (OFX) is about 1,270 INR — roughly C$19 that either reaches your family or doesn't. That difference almost never comes from the advertised fee; most services show “C$0 fees”. The real cost hides in the CAD/INR exchange rate margin each provider applies.

IdealRemit compares 20 services on the Canada → India corridor in real time — including TapTapSend, XE, KOHO, Remitly, Instarem, WorldRemit, Western Union, MoneyGram and Ria — paying to any Indian bank account or UPI ID, usually within minutes.

Just enter your amount and sort by rupees received. It's the only number that matters — and the leader changes from month to month.

Snapshot at 13 June 2026 (providers quoting that day). Rates move in real time.

TapTapSend delivers about 1,270 INR more than OFX on the same C$500 transfer — roughly C$19.

Watch the fixed fees: Paysend posts a strong headline rate but charges C$4.68, and Ria charges C$2 — on small amounts that can outweigh a slightly better rate. MoneyGram was competitive in earlier months.

Why does the CAD/INR rate differ between providers?

The Indian rupee floats on global currency markets, so there's a clear mid-market rate to measure against. Providers don't have to give you that rate — each applies its own margin, and that margin is where the real cost sits.

On our data the spread between the best and worst provider reaches about 3.7% of the amount sent — far wider than fixed-rate corridors, which makes comparing essential:

  • Low margin: TapTapSend, Profee, LemFi, Sendwave, KOHO → more rupees for your recipient
  • Mid margin: XE, WorldRemit, Remitly, Instarem
  • High margin: Skrill, Western Union, Xoom, OFX → noticeably fewer rupees

Advertised fees rarely reflect the true cost. The only reliable figure is the rupees actually received, which our comparison calculates for every option.

Canada → India: the corridor

India is the world's largest recipient of remittances, and Canada is one of its major sources. Canada is home to roughly 1.35 million people of Indian origin — the country's largest racialized group — and India is the single largest source of new immigrants to Canada. Communities are concentrated in Ontario and British Columbia, with large populations in the Greater Toronto Area, Vancouver, Calgary and Brampton.

What makes this corridor different from many others is the receiving side. India is bank-account- and UPI-first: most digital providers — TapTapSend, XE, KOHO, Remitly, Instarem, WorldRemit — pay directly into an Indian bank account (HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis and others) or to a UPI ID, usually within minutes via IMPS. Cash pickup exists but is far less common than bank/UPI payout. Ask your recipient for their account or UPI details and a digital provider will almost always be fastest and cheapest.

Regular transfers — the savings add up

On this corridor the per-transfer gap is large and it compounds:

  • Per C$500 transfer: about 1,270 INR (~C$19) between the best provider and the worst
  • Versus Western Union specifically: a top provider returned on average ~494 INR more per month — about 5,930 INR (~C$87) a year for someone sending C$500 monthly
  • Choosing the best each month rather than the weakest could mean well over C$250 a year more reaching your family

A comparison on IdealRemit takes under 60 seconds. Because the leading provider can change month to month, it's worth checking before every transfer.

CAD/INR trend (March–June 2026)

The Canadian dollar strengthened against the rupee over the period — the best available rate rose from about 68.1 in March to a peak near 69.9 in May, easing back through June. In short, C$500 buys more rupees now than in early spring, though the rate has come off its May high.

June 202668.7168.4768.5168.2268.1668.0067.69

Key takeaway: TapTapSend led in May and June, while KOHO — a Canadian app — and Profee stayed in the top three every month. Western Union trailed throughout. The day of the month and day of the week show no reliable effect — what matters is the provider you pick and the broader CAD/INR trend, not timing your send to a particular day.

Which payment method should you use from Canada?

Bank transfer (EFT / Interac)

  • Pro: usually no extra cost, ideal for larger amounts
  • Con: can take longer to fund than a card
  • Best for: amounts over C$500, no urgency

Debit/credit card

  • Pro: often funds and delivers in minutes
  • Con: credit cards may incur a cash-advance fee from your bank
  • Best for: urgent transfers

Cash payment (agent in person)

  • Available at: Western Union, MoneyGram, Ria (Canadian agent network)
  • Pro: useful if you prefer to pay in cash
  • Con: in-person visit required; most India transfers settle to a bank account or UPI

How does your recipient receive the money in India?

Bank deposit (HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, Kotak, PNB) via IMPS — usually within minutesTapTapSend, XE, KOHO, Remitly, Instarem, WorldRemit, Ria
UPI ID transferXE, Remitly, Instarem, WorldRemit (where supported)
Cash pickup (select networks/bank branches)Western Union, MoneyGram, Ria

Bank deposit and UPI are by far the most common ways to receive money in India — most digital providers credit an Indian bank account or UPI ID within minutes using IMPS. You'll just need your recipient's account number and IFSC code, or their UPI ID.

Tip: for India, a direct bank or UPI transfer is almost always faster and cheaper than cash pickup. Have your recipient's account number + IFSC code (or UPI ID) ready before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions — Money Transfers to India

On recent data, TapTapSend, Profee, LemFi and the Canadian app KOHO offered the best net CAD/INR value, while OFX, Xoom and Western Union were the least competitive. Watch fixed fees (Paysend C$4.68, Ria C$2). Use the comparison above and sort by rupees received.

With June 2026 rates, C$500 ranges from about 32,880 INR (OFX) up to 34,150 INR (TapTapSend) — a difference of roughly 1,270 rupees for the same transfer.

Yes. Most digital providers — TapTapSend, XE, KOHO, Remitly, Instarem, WorldRemit — pay directly into an Indian bank account via IMPS, or to a UPI ID, usually within minutes. You'll need the recipient's account number and IFSC code, or their UPI ID.

The day of the month and day of the week show no reliable effect on the CAD/INR rate. The rate moves with the wider market, which rose into May and has eased slightly since. What matters most is the provider you choose — compare before every transfer rather than trying to time the day.

In June 2026, C$1 was worth roughly 65.8–68.3 rupees depending on the provider. The rupee floats, so rates vary more than on fixed-rate corridors — the provider's margin makes a real difference to the amount received.

Bank deposits via IMPS and UPI transfers are usually credited within minutes. Some providers quote a few hours for verification on a first transfer. Cash pickup, where offered, is also typically available quickly.

Yes, for a first send. Over the period analysed several providers offered promotional rates above standard for new customers (around +2% with Western Union, Ria, MoneyGram and Remitly). A welcome bonus can make even a normally less competitive provider the best choice for one transfer.

There's no legal cap for individuals from Canada. For larger amounts, providers may request ID and source-of-funds documents under anti-money-laundering rules. On the receiving side, large inbound transfers to India are reported to the recipient's bank under FEMA rules but are not taxed as income when sent to close family.
