Mexico is the world's second-largest remittance market, and money transfer services compete hard for it — which is good news if you send from Canada. This is one of the tightest-priced corridors we track: providers cluster closely, so the gaps are smaller than on most routes. But they're not zero. On a C$500 transfer, the difference between the best provider (TapTapSend) and the worst (OFX) is about 170 MXN — roughly C$14 that either reaches your family or doesn't.

That difference almost never comes from the advertised fee; most services show “C$0 fees”. The real cost hides in the CAD/MXN exchange rate margin each provider applies.

IdealRemit compares the Canada → Mexico corridor in real time — including KOHO, TapTapSend, Remitly, XE, Instarem, Ria and Western Union — with delivery to any Mexican bank account via SPEI, or cash pickup at OXXO, Elektra and BanCoppel.

Just enter your amount and sort by pesos received. It's the only number that matters.

Snapshot at 13 June 2026 (providers quoting that day). Rates move in real time.

TapTapSend delivers about 170 MXN more than OFX on the same C$500 transfer — roughly C$14.

Watch the fixed fees: Ria charges C$5 and Paysend C$3 — on a tight corridor like this, a fixed fee can easily outweigh a slightly better rate. Western Union and Sendwave quote less frequently here.

Why does the CAD/MXN rate differ between providers?

The Mexican peso floats on global currency markets, so there's a clear mid-market rate to measure against. Providers don't have to give you that rate — each applies its own margin, and that margin is where the real cost sits.

Mexico is a mature, heavily contested remittance corridor, so providers cluster more tightly here than elsewhere: on our data the spread between best and worst is about 2.8% of the amount sent — smaller than most routes, but still real money on a regular transfer:

  • Low margin: TapTapSend, KOHO, Sendwave, Remitly, Instarem → more pesos for your recipient
  • Mid margin: XE, Western Union, Profee
  • High margin: WorldRemit, Skrill, Xoom, OFX → fewer pesos

Advertised fees rarely reflect the true cost, and a fixed fee bites harder on a tight corridor. The only reliable figure is the pesos actually received, which our comparison calculates for every option.

Canada → Mexico: the corridor

Mexico receives more remittances than almost any country on earth — second only to India — and while most of that comes from the United States, the Canada → Mexico flow is steady and growing. Canada is home to about 155,000 people of Mexican origin, concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area, the Leamington–Windsor region of Ontario, Montreal, Vancouver and the Calgary–Edmonton corridor, alongside a large seasonal agricultural workforce.

On the receiving side, Mexico is built for fast payouts. Bank deposits run through SPEI, the country's real-time payment system, and land in seconds to minutes — you'll need the recipient's 18-digit CLABE or their debit-card number. For families who prefer cash, pickup is available at more than 100,000 locations including OXXO, Elektra/Banco Azteca, BanCoppel, Soriana and Walmart. Many providers also deliver straight to a Mexican debit card.

Regular transfers — the savings add up

This is a competitive corridor, so per-transfer differences are smaller than on most routes — but they still compound:

  • Per C$500 transfer: about 170 MXN (~C$14) between the best provider and the worst
  • Choosing a top provider over a weaker one (such as WorldRemit or Profee) returned on average well over 100 MXN more per month — roughly 1,500 MXN (~C$125) a year for someone sending C$500 monthly
  • On a tight corridor, avoiding a fixed fee (Ria C$5, Paysend C$3) matters as much as the rate

A comparison on IdealRemit takes under 60 seconds — quick insurance that you're on the right side of even a small gap.

CAD/MXN trend (March–June 2026)

The Mexican peso has been strong: the CAD/MXN rate eased from about 13.0 in March to around 12.5 in June, so C$500 buys fewer pesos now than in early spring. On a corridor this tightly priced, that makes choosing the right provider — rather than trying to time the market — the practical way to protect the amount your family receives.

Key takeaway: KOHO — a Canadian app — posted the best average rate in every one of the four months, with TapTapSend and Remitly consistently close behind. The day of the month and day of the week show no reliable effect — what matters is the provider you pick, not timing your send to a particular day.

Which payment method should you use from Canada?

Bank transfer (EFT / Interac)

  • Pro: usually no extra cost, ideal for larger amounts
  • Con: can take longer to fund than a card
  • Best for: amounts over C$500, no urgency

Debit/credit card

  • Pro: often funds and delivers in minutes
  • Con: credit cards may incur a cash-advance fee from your bank
  • Best for: urgent transfers

Cash payment (agent in person)

  • Available at: Western Union, Ria (Canadian agent network)
  • Pro: useful if you prefer to pay in cash
  • Con: in-person visit required; most Mexico transfers settle to a bank account, debit card or cash pickup

How does your recipient receive the money in Mexico?

Receiving methodProviders / networks
Bank deposit via SPEI (BBVA, Banorte, Santander, Banamex, HSBC) — seconds to minutes, needs CLABEKOHO, TapTapSend, Remitly, XE, Instarem, WorldRemit, Ria
Cash pickup (OXXO, Elektra/Banco Azteca, BanCoppel, Soriana, Walmart)Western Union, Ria, Remitly
Debit card depositRemitly, Xoom (where supported)
Home delivery (select areas)select remittance partners

Bank deposit via SPEI is the fastest option — often credited in seconds — and just needs the recipient's 18-digit CLABE (or their debit-card number). For cash, Mexico has one of the densest payout networks anywhere: OXXO, Elektra/Banco Azteca and BanCoppel together cover well over 100,000 locations.

Tip: ask whether your recipient wants a bank deposit or cash. For a bank deposit you'll need their CLABE (18 digits) — they can find it in their bank app — while cash pickup needs only the recipient's name and a valid ID at the counter.

Frequently Asked Questions — Money Transfers to Mexico

On recent data, TapTapSend and the Canadian app KOHO offered the best net CAD/MXN value, with Sendwave and Remitly close behind. OFX, Xoom and Skrill were the least competitive. It's a tight corridor, so watch fixed fees (Ria C$5, Paysend C$3). Use the comparison above and sort by pesos received.

With June 2026 rates, C$500 ranges from about 5,981 MXN (OFX) up to 6,150 MXN (TapTapSend) — a difference of roughly 170 pesos for the same transfer.

Yes. Most providers deposit into Mexican bank accounts through SPEI, the country's real-time payment system, usually within seconds to minutes. You'll need the recipient's 18-digit CLABE or their debit-card number. Cash pickup at OXXO, Elektra and BanCoppel is also widely available.

The day of the month and day of the week show no reliable effect on the CAD/MXN rate. The peso has been strong and the rate has eased since spring. On such a competitive corridor, choosing the right provider matters more than timing — compare before every transfer.

In June 2026, C$1 was worth roughly 11.96–12.30 pesos depending on the provider. The peso floats, so the provider's margin — small as it is on this corridor — still changes the amount received.

Bank deposits via SPEI are usually credited in seconds to minutes. Cash pickup at OXXO, Elektra or BanCoppel is typically available within minutes. A first transfer may take slightly longer for verification.

Yes, for a first send. Over the period analysed several providers offered promotional rates above standard for new customers (up to +4.5% with Remitly and +4.1% with Ria). On a tight corridor, a welcome bonus can be a bigger one-time win than the usual rate difference.

There's no legal cap for individuals from Canada. For larger amounts, providers may request ID and source-of-funds documents under anti-money-laundering rules. Funds are received in pesos in Mexico; the exchange happens when you send.
